DANCEAFRICA 2024

May 7 - May 31, 2024

BAM is a staple in Fort Greene and every year during the month of May, the building and surrounding streets are transformed into a vibrant celebration of community, culture, and collective joy for the DanceAfrica festival. Brooklynites, and visitors from all over are encouraged to enjoy the borough’s unofficial summer kick-off. Whether you want to experience the dance performances, support the vendors, participate in workshops, visual art commissions, or film screenings, there is truly something for everyone.

GIANTS: Pop-Up Talks

Guests are invited to gain additional context by way of pop-up art talks hosted by Brooklyn Museum guides. This is a great way to learn more about the first major exhibition dedicated to the world-class art collection of Mr. & Mrs. Dean. The sprawling exhibition features over 100 artworks by Black American, African, and African diasporic artists. Since it is the first Saturday of the month, if you decide to stick around after the tours, you will be able to witness the museum come alive with the May installment of First Saturday. The conversations are free with museum admission.

TATYANA FAZLALIZADEH: FINDING SOFT GROUND

APRIL 6 - AUGUST 10, 2024

Venture through the three galleries of Art + Practice, as Fazlalizadeh, a Brooklyn-based artist, transforms each space into a thought-provoking installation. Delve into the complexities of the street, the sanctuary of home, and the solace found in nature, all in relation to themes of terror and refuge. Finding Soft Ground is a testament to the imaginative determination of Black women, inviting visitors to contemplate the conditions that shape their sense of safety.

This exhibition is presented alongside Speaking to Falling Seeds, featuring monumental portraits of Black Los Angeles women. Witness the power of Fazlalizadeh's artistry as it takes center stage in CAAM's atrium, amplifying the voices and experiences of Black women in the community.
